Gale encyclopedia of genetic disorders |
Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorder» Two Volume Set Readable, well organized, and easy to use, this outstanding encyclopedia signifies a timely and major advance in providing in-depth and comprehensive coverage of medical genetics for the lay reader. The two volumes include nearly 400 substantive entries on genetic diseases and conditions as well as information on basic genetics concepts such as DNA, chromosomes, genetic testing, and pedigree analysis and construction (genetic family history). An advisory board of seven distinguished genetics specialists (clinical geneticists and genetic counselors) oversaw the accuracy of the text, which is authored by an international slate of clinicians, genetic counselors, and medical writers. Each of the alphabetically arranged entries follows a standard format definition, description, genetic profile, demographics, and signs and symptoms designed to answer the questions healthcare consumers actually ask. In addition, entries provide citations for further reading, contact information for support and advocacy organizations, and recommendations for notable web sites. Cross references for subjects without entries are interspersed throughout the work and are easy to follow. The key terms box that appears in select entries and provides succinct and understandable definitions is especially noteworthy. Other special features include a comprehensive glossary, a chromosome map, a guide to symbols for pedigree charts, and an organizations directory all features that should make understanding difficult genetics concepts much easier. The Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders and Birth Defects (Facts On File, 2000. 2d ed.) has long been the authoritative title for this subject and should remain on the shelf. However, larger consumer health collections and those that frequently receive requests for consumer information on clinical genetics are advised to purchase this as a supplement; it is worth every penny. Highly recommended. Stacey L. The Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health (Five Volume Set) | |
Description The Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health is a unique and invaluable source of information for the nursing or allied health student. This collection of over 850 entries provides in-depth coverage of specific diseases and disorders, tests and procedures, equipment and tools, body systems, nursing and allied health professions, and current health issues. This book is designed to fill a gap between health information designed for laypeople and that provided for medical professionals, which may be too complicated for the beginning student to understand. The encyclopedia does use medical terminology, but explains it in a way that students can understand. The entries are one to six pages long. They include definitions and descriptions along with basic material related to the subject (diagnosis and treatment of diseases, maintenance of equipment, and required education for careers). Definitions of key terms appear in shaded boxes, and black-and-white illustrations augment the text. Resource lists appear at the ends of the articles. An appendix lists allied health and nursing organizations. This edition of The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Health revisits the previously published work, updating and adding overviews of new topics such as premenstrual syndrome, bullying and road rage,” said Kate Hanley, product manager at Gale, part of Cengage Learning. “All aspects of mental health are covered, from various clinical diagnoses and related treatments to effective ways for dealing with life’s common challenges.
Featuring an easy-to-use format and written in non-technical language, the Encyclopedia includes entries for all 150 disorders classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, text revision (DSM-IV-TR). It also features entries for prescription, alternative and over-the-counter drugs, as well as the various therapies used to treat mental disorders. Entries for medical test and surgical procedures follow a consistent format, covering definition; purpose; demographic information; diagnosis/preparation; aftercare; risks; morbidity and mortality rates; alternatives; and more. Additional features include 175 full-color illustrations and photographs; bibliographies of further reading sources; a glossary of medical terminology; appendices listing top centers for specific surgical procedures and national organizations and support groups for patients; and a comprehensive index. Each chapter begins with an overview and an outline of the topics and subtopics that are covered. Within the chapters, entries are generally arranged in alphabetical order. Each ends with a further reading list called "Delving Deeper." Glossaries are appended to each chapter and cumulated in volume 3. Occasional cross-references appear in bold type within the text to refer the reader to other entries, but since the set does not have a strict A-Z arrangement, one must use the index to determine where those entries are located. Because of the set's topical arrangement, the index is essential. The Steigers, prolific writers on the paranormal, have written an encyclopedia for believers. The volumes are meant to "explore and describe the research of those who take such phenomena seriously." Almost everything from mediumship to crop circles is taken at face value. Even Houdini's attacks on phony mediums are interpreted to suggest he was taking on frauds and not real mediums. Fraud does not appear in the index, nor are alternate suggestions of how phenomena could have occurred presented. Only in a few instances is some skepticism applied. The work covers material of interest to a large segment of the public in a way that is clear and readable. Many works in the "Delving Deeper" sections will provide the beginning student of the paranormal with good starting points. Recommended for medium-size to large public libraries and for academic libraries with comparative religion, folklore, and popular culture collections. The two consecutively paged volumes contain approximately 400 signed, alphabetical entries. The authors are health-care professionals and medical writers. The articles cover diseases (Batten disease, Rasmussen's encephalitis); syndromes (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Tourette syndrome); drugs (Antimigraine medications, Valporic acid and divalproex sodium); treatments (Acupuncture, Radiation); therapies (Craniotomy, Bodywork therapies); and diagnostic equipment and devices (Electronic personal assistive mobility devices, CT scan). There are also entries for anatomical and physiological topics such as Cerebral circulation and common symptoms such as dizziness. The articles are one to four pages long. All have shaded boxes with definitions of key terms and resource lists, and many have color illustrations. An alphabetical list of all articles appears at the beginning of each volume. The lack of see references in this list and in the text is a minor inconvenience. There is a glossary at the end of volume 2. The reading level is fairly high, so public and consumer health collections will also need resources at a lower literacy level. There is some duplication and overlap with other Gale medical encyclopedias. The article Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is identical to that in The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (1999). Some material from The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders (2002) appears here because of the role of neurotransmitters in mental illness. Since many genetic diseases affect the nervous system, there is some overlap with The Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders (2001) also. The article on Canavan disease is almost identical. Nevertheless, most public and consumer health libraries will want The Gale Encyclopedia of Neurological Disorders because of its focus on complex conditions that are not well covered in other lay medical encyclopedias.
